volunteering at zoo negara

assalamualaikum wbt.

it had been a while since my last post....not much stories can be updated for my dear readers....so for this latest entry, I would like to share my experience being a volunteer at Zoo Negara......

at first, I didn't know at all that we can be a volunteer at there till one of my college seniors posted on our college's group in FB about this whole volunteer thing in Zoo Negara....when I knew about it, I said hey why not...maybe this is a good way for me to learn more plus I can gain new experience....so Min and I decided to go on 26 Jan....

I woke up early as we have to arrive at 8 because there will be briefing and work distributions....if this is your first time volunteering, you have to fill the form first and pay RM 10 for the registration fees....when it's all done..you will get a sticker as a prove that you are a volunteer...and you can choose to go in a group (at least 10 in a group) or individual...but make sure you call the Education Department of Zoo Negara 2 days before..

you have to wear it either on your left or right arm...

on that day, there are seven of us all together...so we're divided into three groups....so I was in one group with Ahmad and Abang Umar as our supervisor of the day....we're assigned to section three, the BEAR section...rawrr...then we were asked to change our shoes to the rubber boots provided....I spend almost 15 minutes just to find the right pair of boots *sigh*

so my first task is to clean the tapir's cage (Tapirus Indicus) with Uncle (I didn't know his full name so I just called him uncle)....I have to remove all the twigs and lastly cleaned the withered leaves that were mixed up with its poops (eeeuww)...next I have to clean the pond and fed the tapir.....next, I was asked to go to the Indian Bison (Bos Gaurus) ...when I arrived there, I smelled something....an unpleasant smell from one of the cage....so when I peeped, I saw that one of the female gaur had died that morning...I couldn't took the picture of it because I forgot to bring my camera along with me (what a waste).....then, after that I saw another gaur were also locked up in the cage....and it was so skinny that I can see the bone clearly....the reason why he was locked up it's because he was involved in a fight with this two gaur (I think he was bullied by them) and by the way, the dead female gaur is his first wife...( Abang Umar said that the dead one is the hottest female gaur...LOL).....oohh my...you should see the skinny gaur eyes when it saw its wife's corpse...

I spent about one hour...maybe just half an hour at there....and next, we cleaned the capybara's place...ooh they're so cute that I want to cuddled them.....

that cool gaze from Mr. Capybara ( Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris)
because I was the only girl there, so I was asked to clean their food tray and fed them....their diet consist of fruits and vegetables.....so I had this basket full of fruits and vegetables and I had to distribute them evenly into three...so as I was doing my work, one of the capybara tried to steal the food....what I can say more...they're were so cute that I was thinking to bring one back home :) Then, when I'm done, suddenly Abang Umar called me and he showed me some plastic...I was like...NOOOO....not me....do you know why? because that plastic is used to collect poops....yup those capybara's poops.....because I'm a tough girl...nevermind this was nothing....and I have to collect the poops from the pond......and I did it !! wwwoooooohooooo~~~~

after we finished, Abang Umar said that we can go for a rest and came back again on 2 o'clock.....so I quickly went back to section three to meet min....and then we went for a walk around the zoo....we get to know new animals...for example, the snake-head turtle (Chelodina longicollis) and we had a chance to touch a snake...

so I think that's all I want to share with you.....before that, I would like to give you some tips

  • please wear a proper attire. Long trousers, no sleeveless shirt and wear sport shoes or sneakers.
  • bring your own rubber boots....don't worry, If you don't have one...because they provide boots for the volunteers
  • bring extra clothes with you.....just in case...
  • you can also bring your own food...because the food are quite expensive...
that's all from me.....if you have any question...you can comment below...or asked me through facebook, twitter or my ask.fm....buuuhbyyeeee~~~~

p/s: and please tell me if I made a mistake with my grammar or my spelling.. tqvm :)
