NALS: Introduction

assalamualaikum wbt. and hi :)

alhamdullilah I just finished my test for the first three subjects that I took for this semester. So I can steal some time to write a new post for my blog...I'm sorry because I'm not too active posting new entries thus I couldn't fulfilled my promise to post at least a new entry every two weeks...but I'll try my best....so today post is on my experience participating in NALS...

I first know about this symposium on the IM4U Facebook group...they were looking for a volunteer actually. However, luck is not on my side. By the time I had made up mind whether I should be a participant or volunteer, the application for the volunteer were closed. So I had no choice but to registered as a participant.

NALS actually stands for National Aspiration Leadership Symposium. It's a one day programme, packed with talks and Q&A session at the end of each sessions. FYI, the one that responsible for organizing this event is Kelab Pemuda UMNO Luar Negara. (I'm neutral...)

so what is NALS actually? NALS is actually the annual initiatives event gathering between the local and overseas Malaysian student leaders. Through NALS, participant will be able to get some knowledge about the Malaysian leadership skills as well identified and solve national and international obstacles along the way. It is also a great medium for the past leaders to share their experience and knowledge to the future leaders of Malaysia. Basically, NALS was organized because of three main reasons

  • to share ideas, thoughts, visions and aspiration among Malaysian young leaders
  • allow student to keep abreast with the current developments of the country
  • to instil self-esteem,national pride and patriotism
  • forging a closer relationship between local and overseas student leaders

welcome to all the young future leaders :)

Wan Sharifuddin and YB
OPENING CEREMONY

so the first event on the tentative is the opening ceremony by YB Khairy Jamaluddin, the Chairman of BN Youth. He is one of my favourite speakers. I like his way of giving his talk, inspiring and full of facts. Plus, his English was awesome. So his speech was about "Are the Youth of Malaysia driving towards vision 2020?".

He had highlighted a few points regarding today's scenarios. First, the demographic change in Malaysia. 45% of Malaysian citizens are young people and they're the main users of social media and they had become citizen journalist. Citizen journalist is based upon public citizens "playing an active role" in the process of collecting, reporting, analyzing and disseminating news and information. He also said that urban areas is the main place where ideas are created and exchange and this due to the fact that almost 60-70% citizens are working those areas.

Another interesting part in his speech when he explained about the questioned of identity. He said that Malaysia is a very sensitive country as we tend to avoid saying things that can hurt others (in terms of race and religious). He told us to find ways how to delete the parallel lines between the races. Parallel lines, giving the example of, imagine a Chinese Boys that entered the ventricular schools throughout his study years. When he graduated, he entered a private college that use Mandarin as its intermediate language. Few kilometres from his house, lived a Malay boy that entered sekolah pondok throughout his study years. After he graduated, he went to further hi study to Jordan. They never met each other so how they will learn to understand each other well.

SESSION 1

The next session was panel discussion. Three speakers and one moderator  The first session is about
"Young leaders; Line between perception and reality. Where do the youth of Malaysian stand on?"

The panellist for this session were Azzairi Rosli, a law graduate from UM. Izhar Moslim that worked as the Special Officer for Dato' Idris Jala and lastly, Hafiz Ariffin the current President of National Student Representative Council.

Izhar Moslim, Azzairi Rosle and Hafiz Ariffin

Mr.Moderator: Anwar Hadi :)
I manage to jot down few things that I would like to share with you, dear readers. The panel have to answer questions given by the moderator. So the first question is is it ture that supervisor system will block our freedom. So bro azzairi said that he didn't quite agreed with the statement as he thought that we should have someone to guide us in whatever that we do. Even though  we have the power to think, act and talk but we should remember that we couldn't express everything so freely. I love when he said that, as a leaders, to make people remember us even though we are no longer in position, leave a system for others to follow.

Next, Bro Izhar talk about the perception and reality, on how we can closer the gap between perception and reality especially in the leadership phase. He introduced us to the 3E's formulas.

  • Education
  • Experience
  • Exposure.
Lastly, Bro Hafiz shared with us on how we can create perception. There are four steps altogether. It is by controlling your emotions, know your motives, objectives of reasoning and the power of influence.

other interesting quotes:
  •  In Malaysia, our leadership capability are not limited by adults but it is because there are not enough opportunities to groom us.
  • When you put a certain qualities for the leader that you want to choose, a lot of potential leaders are wasted.
  • Agree and disagree are the highest discipline of knowledge.

SESSION 2

The next session start at 2 pm and it's about politocs. The panellist for this session are Dato' Saifuddin Abdullah (Deputy Minister of Higher Education), Dato' Khairun Aseh (UMNO Youth Executive Member for Community Complain Bureau) and Dato' Dr. Kamarul Rashdan (Managing Director of SPNB). The topic for session 2 is

"New Politics" Fresh Wave of Politics. Should the Young People Embrace It?"

Dato' Kamarul Rashdan. Dato' Khairun Aseh and Dato' Saifuddin Abdullah

Mr.Moderator :) -aiman haziq

as it is the afternoon session, I started to get sleepy and tired. So I felt asleep in the after Dato' Saifuddin's part. So, I didn't have anything to share to you from the other two panellists. But I still have a few points that I would like to share with all of you... all the panellists agreed that there are no correct definition for "new politics". Everyone has their own view and opinion but according to Dato', new politics refers to new government formed after the general elections and it also refers to the changes that we made on how we do the politics. Dato' Saifuddin had listed out his four thrust of new politics.

  • Integrity : the idealism and reasons why we join politics.
  • New government framework: ensure that all state holders have their own role in national building..make them as the partners in the decision making process.
  • Innovation in democracy: more people will be involve in decision making process.
  • Progressive political talk: using new approaches

p/s: as I'm afraid this will be a very long, long, long, long post...so I split it into two parts...so to be continued :)
